California Beaches Face Dangerous Surf Conditions Due to Powerful Swells
US · Published Jun 1, 2026
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazards warning for California's coastline, effective until Tuesday morning.
This alert is driven by a long-period southwest swell, which is producing powerful and widely spaced waves generated by distant Pacific storms.
These conditions are creating significant risks, including sneaker waves and strong rip currents.

Why It's Important?

The primary risks include sneaker waves, which can knock people off their feet and drag them into the ocean, and strong rip currents, which can pull swimmers away from shore. These conditions are dangerous even for experienced swimmers. The NWS has emphasized that these hazards can lead to life-threatening situations, especially for those near rocks, jetties, or piers. Federal safety data indicates that rip currents are responsible for over 100 deaths annually in the U.S. and account for more than 80% of beach lifeguard rescues.
